Don’t let the cold keep you cooped up this winter—bundle up, step outside, and explore the beauty of La Crosse’s landscapes on these winter walks! From peaceful riverfront strolls to scenic wooded trails, there are plenty of stunning spots to enjoy a brisk walk in the fresh, crisp air. Whether you’re looking for an easy outing or a snowy adventure, these local trails and parks are perfect for embracing the magic of winter! 

 


 

Myrick Park 

Location: 2107 La Crosse Street, La Crosse

Myrick Park connects to the marsh trails, offering a serene winter landscape with chances to see wildlife, including deer and winter birds. The trails are mostly flat and easy to walk! For a bit of an extended walk along the marsh, park at the lot near The Nature Place. If you’d like to walk right through the marsh on the Grand Crossing Trail, drive down East Avenue North and park at the Marsh Loop Trailhead.

 


 

Riverside Park

Location: 100 State Street, La Crosse

Located along the Mississippi River, Riverside Park offers stunning winter views of the river and iconic Cass Street Bridge. The paved paths make it easy to navigate even with some snow, and you might spot eagles soaring overhead. Ample parking is available downtown, including street parking near Riverside Park!  

 


 

Riverside International Friendship Gardens

Location: 345-405 E Veterans Memorial Drive, La Crosse

Tucked within Riverside Park, the International Friendship Gardens is a hidden gem that celebrates La Crosse’s global connections through beautifully designed garden spaces. Each section represents a different country (China, Germany, France, Russia, Norway, Ireland, and Cameroon), featuring unique landscaping, sculptures, and cultural elements. 

 


 

Pearl Street Walkway

Location: 2nd & Pearl Street, La Crosse

The Pearl Street Walkway is a charming pedestrian path that connects downtown La Crosse to Riverside Park, offering a scenic and convenient route to the Mississippi River. Start on Pearl Street to enjoy the historic shops and restaurants (even though it’s winter..we still recommend getting ice cream from the Pearl!), and then walk down the path to see the beauty of the riverfront!

 


 

Great River State Trail

Locations: Popular access points are the Great River Landing, La Crosse State Trailhead, or the Midway Entrance

Running along the Mississippi River Valley and built alongside an abandoned railway, the Great River State Trail provides breathtaking views and a quiet, peaceful setting for a winter walk! Being 24 miles long, there are many access points to the trail, so you have several opportunities to explore different sceneries. 

 


 

If you’re up for a bit more adventure, the Upper and Lower Hixon Trails provide a mix of wooded trails and open bluff-top views. Snowshoes or traction cleats might be helpful on icy days!
