Snowshoeing and Cross Country Skiing

Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are perfect ways to embrace the beauty of winter while staying active. Both are low-impact sports that allow you to explore serene snow-covered trails, experience nature up close, and enjoy the peaceful quiet of the season…all at your own pace! They’re accessible to all skill levels, require minimal equipment and offer a fantastic full-body workout.

- Coulee State Experimental Forest – Local volunteers created 12 miles of groomed trails! See the trail maps here. There are two locations to park and enter the trails: Western parking area and Eastern parking area.
- Forest Hills Golf Course – 600 Losey Boulevard North, La Crosse
- Great River State Trail – There are many entry points here, too! Popular access points are the Great River Landing, La Crosse State Trailhead, or the Midway Entrance
- Greens Coulee – There are two parking areas to access: 804 Stonebridge Ave, Onalaska or the Savannah Oaks Trailhead at 2665 Spring Hill Way, Onalaska. (Note that this area is closed to hikers during hunting season, as bow hunting is permitted on this land!)
- Goose Island – W6488 County Road G I, Stoddard
- Hixon Forest – There are many entry points for Hixon Forest! See a full list here, and check out the trail conditions from ORA Trails.
- Norskedalen – N455 O Ophus Road, Coon Valley. Admission fee required! All visitors are asked to check in at the Thrune Visitors’ Center before enjoying our grounds. See a list of their many trails here!
- Van Loon State Wildlife Area, McGilvray “7 Bridges” Road Trail: N8327 Amsterdam Prairie Road, Holmen – Once a road for vehicular traffic, you’ll encounter multiple stunning bridges along your journey!
Just a reminder, if you’re snowshoeing, please avoid walking over the groomed ski trails!
Ice Fishing
Situated along the Mississippi River, La Crosse boasts an abundance of prime fishing spots, from backwaters to quiet bays and channels. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, the area provides ample opportunities to reel in species like panfish, walleye, bass, and northern pike. With the right gear and a little patience, ice fishing in La Crosse makes for a great activity!

- Goose Island – Multiple access points in these backwaters! Great for panfish and pike.
- Lake Onalaska – The backwaters of the Mississippi created this fisherman’s haven! Popular access points include Mosey’s Landing, Fred Funk Landing, and Nelson Park. Great for perch and bass.
- Lawrence Lake – Across the river from La Crosse, this backwater lake is a popular spot for ice fishing, known for species such as bluegill and crappie.
