6pm: Wayne’s World (1992)
Directed by Penelope Spheeris
Rated PG-13
Back in the early 1980s, long before he hit it big on SNL, Mike Myers debuted the character of Wayne on a Canadian variety show called It’s Only Rock and Roll. In a recurring sketch titled “Wayne’s Power Minute,” Myers (as Wayne) would opine on such subjects as the best heavy metal album covers or the correct pronunciation of the word “party.” When he was cast on Saturday Night Live for their 1989 season, Myers pitched the character and cable access concept to Lorne Michaels, who suggested it would work better if Wayne had a sidekick. Myers knew he needed one of the strongest performers in the cast, somebody who could carry their own in a two-person sketch, so he approached Dana Carvey. Carvey quickly understood the idea, drawing inspiration from his real life little brother for the character of Garth, Wayne’s best friend and foil, resulting in one of the best loved (and most quotable) comedic duos in modern comedy.
So what are you waiting for? Crank the Queen, jump in the Mirthmobile and head-bang your way to the Rivoli for another totally excellent Cult Movie Night!
8pm: UHF (1989)
Directed by Jay Levey
Rated PG-13
After the release of 1985’s Dare to Be Stupid, “Weird Al” Yankovic and his manager Jay Levey were looking for other venues in which the multi-talented musician’s brand of offbeat humor would work. At first they thought television would be the way to go, when an idea struck them – what about a movie about television? The premise would allow Yankovic to parody movies as well as television, record a soundtrack, maybe even work a music video into the the film somehow. Using 1980’s smash-hit Airplane! as the model, they knew that a funny movie didn’t need a strong plot to be a success. Script in hand, the pair shopped UHF around Hollywood for three years when the newly formed production house Cincecorp agreed to finance the film in partnership with Orion Pictures. The film tested well, and everyone was set for a sweeping success…but unfortunately, UHF faced steep competition at the box office, opening at a time when films like Batman, Back to the Future pt. II, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were still going strong. The film left theaters in under a month, only to go on and find a faithful audience via the home video and cable TV market.
So don’t miss your chance to catch one of the rarest cult films to hit the Rivoli yet! Featuring segments like “Wheel of Fish,” “Conan the Librarian,” and “Secrets of the Universe,” if you’re looking for something off the beaten path to watch tonight, look no further…cause like the song says, “we’ve got it all on UHF!”
