The Rim of the City hike is one of La Crosse’s hidden gems, offering a bird’s eye view of the region’s natural beauty, especially during the fall season! Despite being close to the city, the Rim of the City trail feels secluded and peaceful. The trail winds through dense forests, gradually leading you to the ridge, where you’ll be greeted by striking views of the Mississippi River Valley, the city of La Crosse, and the surrounding bluffs.

About 30 minutes from La Crosse, Perrot State Park in Trempealeau is worth the drive for its dramatic bluffs and hardwood forests. The park’s trails, like Brady’s Bluff Trail, offer challenging yet rewarding hikes with views of the bluffs and Mississippi River. The sweeping vistas from the bluffs are particularly breathtaking in the fall, so even though you’ll likely break a sweat, it will be worth it!

Of course, you knew we had to add this one to the list! No trip to La Crosse is complete without a visit to Grandad Bluff. This iconic overlook offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Mississippi River Valley, and it’s notably spectacular during the fall. There’s a short, easy hike from the parking lot to the top (paved and all-accessible!), which rewards you with extraordinary views of colorful foliage. If you’re looking for a quick, yet stunning autumn experience, Grandad Bluff is the perfect choice. If you’re looking to spend some more time immersed in nature, check out the surrounding Upper and Lower Hixon Forest trails too!
