★About the Speaker:
Niti Mishra is an associate professor in Geography & Environmental Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. His research focuses on how humans interact with the environment, using tools like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to better understand the landscapes we live in.
★ About the Presentation:
Drones are transforming the way we monitor and protect the environment. By offering a bird’s-eye view of the landscape, drones make it possible to quickly assess and track changes in ecosystems—something that was once time-consuming and difficult to achieve, especially across large or remote areas.
In the Driftless Area, a region known for its unique geography and biodiversity, drones are being used to gather important data for conservation efforts. From detecting invasive aquatic plants in local waterways to mapping the delicate coldwater habitats of native species, drones are helping scientists and conservationists understand and protect the region’s natural resources. They’re also providing valuable insights into stream health, the impact of land use on local ecology, and even tracking the seasonal changes in prairie vegetation.
This talk will explore how drone technology is being used for ecological research and conservation, highlighting both the exciting potential and the challenges of this innovative tool.
